Chris' Diet Supporting The Circulation Foundation, the Vascular Charity.

Lose 3 stones in 30 days
Since losing my 27 year old daughter Zoe to an aneurysm in the birth of her second child, I really felt as though I wanted to do something for a charity that supports research into vascular disease, but to actually raise money in my state of health right now is challenging. As a 55 year old disabled, diabetic, arthritic, morbidly obese man I couldn't sign up for a fun run or a sky dive so I decided to do something which hopefully does the charity and myself some good. Currently I weigh 27st 2lb (172.7 kg) so I plan to try and lose 3 stones in 30 days. This may sound ambitious and it probably is, but this isn't going to be a stupid starvation diet and it will have the healthiest start you can imagine. If anyone wants to join me, please consult your GP, I consulted mine and he pledge 20 to get me started so he definitely approves.

The Plan
I have tried this diet before, it is extremely challenging at times but I lost an astonishing amount of weight in 9 days (2st). After the first couple of days of feeling under the weather (I'm guessing this is the detox phase) I suddenly was bursting with energy and felt the best I ever had, these benefits continued for a couple of months, long after I'd returned to my usual bad eating habits. The plan is to consume nothing but raw fruit and veg juice, water, lemon infused water and maybe some fruit teas for at least the first 7 days, this will be another challenge for a Diet Coke addict. From then on I intend to supplement the juicing with healthy meals. Everything I eat will appear in the chart below as well as the result of my weekly weigh-ins.

Exercise
I believe exercise is vital to prevent muscle loss as well as fat, leaving you worse off should your diet fail.
Well I can barely walk so this is going to be another challenge, swimming is the only time I feel normal as it supports the weight of my frame, so swimming 3 times a week is the plan.

Starting weight Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Final Weight
27st 2lb (172.7kg) 25st 12lb (164.4kg) 25st 5lb (161.2kg) 24st 13lb (158.4kg) 24st 7lb (155.5kg)
  weight loss 1st 4lb (8.3kg) weight loss 7lb (3.2kg) weight loss 6lb (2.7kg) Weight loss 6lb (2.7kg)
  total loss 1st 4lb (8.3kg) total loss 1st 11lb (11.5kg) total loss 2st 3lb (14kg) Total loss 2st 9lb (17.2kg)
Week 1:
Very happy with results so far, had a few problems throughout the week but I was never going to quit. I was disappointed not to go at least 9 days again before breaking my fast but I seem to be doing fine the way I'm doing it and looking forward to an evening meal helps me through the day, I love fish, and eggs are apparently good for diabetes. Trying to give up Diet Coke at the same time was a mistake, I know it's literally poison but at least it has no calories, that's a challenge for a different day. Found myself dehydrated towards the end of the week, surprising as I've consumed so much liquid, apparently thirst can be confused with hunger so I'm drinking more water and feel better for it. I may feel hungry at times but my body is not starving, that is receiving more body repairing micro-nutrients than ever. I even caught a glimpse of my feet earlier :)
As my BMI has dropped to under 50, I'm not super morbidly obese anymore, I'm just morbidly obese, phew! What a relief  :)
Week 2:
Well another half stone this week, I can't complain, it's great, but it's going to make the next couple of weeks tough. I'm going to cut back a little this coming week but keeping having the one meal per day. I wouldn't recommend this diet the way I'm doing it, you have supposed to have 4 juices per day to give you lots of nutrition, I'm not cutting them out to lose weight, I just can't always face drinking them. Thank you for your support so far. Just below on the right is one of my favourite photos of my beautiful daughter Zoe who we so tragically lost last year, she is the reason I'm doing this and I know she would have joined me in this were she still here.
Week 3:
Another 6lb loss this week, normally I'd be delighted as the weight is falling off but I'm not sure it's happening fast enough. The home scales lied to me yesterday as they made me a further 2lb lighter, now I have 9 days to lose 11lb.  I'm no expert but I wonder if sometimes I'm not eating enough, though I can't risk trying under these circumstances. Will just try harder instead, more exercise and less food seems the obvious way to go.
Week 4:
Well I lost a total of 2st 9lb in the 30 days, I am delighted but a little disappointed I didn't reach my 3st target in time, another few days and I'd have probably made it. Never mind, I managed to raise 302 pounds plus gift aid for a really deserving and under publicised charity, I can move around a lot easier and intend to continue with the healthy eating to see where it takes me, thank you to everyone who supported me, now onto the next challenge whatever that may be.

DAY 28

28th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

Tin mackerel fillets in tomato sauce boiled haddock with poached egg strawberries
didn't do official weigh-in, waiting till last day on Saturday. Had a diabetes check at doctors found out I'd lost 23kg (3st 8lb) since March and 22 cm (8.5 inches) off my waist measurement! I think this goes someway to explaining why I'm struggling to make my target in time.

DAY 27

27th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

Tin mackerel fillets in tomato sauce boiled haddock with poached egg cherries
nothing to report, need a more varied diet, getting fed up with boiled haddock

DAY 26

26th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

Chilli con carne, jacket potato boiled haddock, boiled tomatoes, poached egg strawberries

DAY 25

25th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

Grilled chicken salad Mackerel fillets, poached egg strawberries
Hmmm, not looking good, I seem to have stopped losing weight, which is shocking considering what I'm eating compared to normal, it doesn't make any sense at all to me. Will carry on and keep hoping.

DAY 24

24th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

Jacket potato, tuna side salad Jacket potato, salmon strawberries
Trying to keep moving, doing little jobs around the house to keep me busy, jobs I can't normally do so definite improvement in health, when I'm busy I'm not hungry, will have a cheeky weigh-in on home scales in the morning.

DAY 23

23rd July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

DAY 22

22nd July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

300ml juice: Broccoli, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon strawberries Boiled Haddock
Only 300ml you wonder? Well the juicer just caught fire mid-juice. Don't know what to do now, it was a decent one and I can't afford to replace it right now. Off swimming soon.

DAY 21

21st July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

boiled haddock, boiled tomatoes, poached egg homemade broccoli and tomato soup
Wife made some super healthy soup, absolutely delicious, have some left if I need to eat more later.

DAY 20

20th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

fresh pineapple sardine salad with cherry tomatoes kippers with poached egg, black pepper
Had a cheeky weigh-in this morning, delighted ahead of official one tomorrow. Was going to have pineapple and apple juice this morning but decided to just eat the pineapple. Need to go shopping for veg juice ingredients, will go tomorrow after weigh-in

DAY 19

19th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: spinach, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon strawberries Grilled Mackerel fillets with poached egg, black pepper.
Feeling down today as would be Zoe's first wedding anniversary, I know a lot of people are hurting today. Changing the subject, I like fish, I expect you've noticed and it's a lot healthier than meat so I'm sticking with it.

DAY 18

18th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: spinach, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon Sardine salad Boiled Haddock
Had a day off from juicing yesterday, needed a break but feel refocused today. Started the day with lemon water. Too hot indoors so off to the beach, maybe a swim in the sea. Wife has taken sandwiches for the family and a salad for me. Work can wait till this evening. Had a great day, swimming and playing ball in the sea. Going to weigh myself in the morning and see how best to continue. Feeling good and happy to continue this way, normally this would be good enough but I set myself a pretty tough target.

DAY 17

17th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: watermelon
Banana
Pilchard and boiled egg salad with ACV grapes small bowl pasta bolognese
Watermelon juice...disgusting! It tastes like your next door neighbour has set fire to some old tyres. Felt weak and hungry today, definitely needed to eat more, suddenly found some energy afterwards, did the disabled exercises again, getting easier every time and vision is returning to normal at last. Wife was suddenly transported back to that terrible day last December, I joined her for the emotional ride, so sad.

DAY 16

16th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: spinach, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon Jacket potato, tuna, ACV, black pepper banana strawberries
My daughter bought some scales yesterday so I weighed myself and hadn't lost anymore weight, however this morning I have lost 4lb so I am feeling encouraged, maybe I will hit my target after all. I need to increase my intake of tomatoes, they contain lycopene which can protect you from cancer, broccoli protects you too, particularly from prostate cancer, cooked tomatoes contain more lycopene than raw so maybe some soup later on. Had my first carbs today, don't know what effect that will have.

DAY 15

15th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: plums, grapefruit, apple, lemon poached egg and grilled kippers banana strawberries
Always experimenting with different juices, usually because that's all that left. Showing my age but this fruity one was like Cresta "it's frothy man". For some reason I keep dreaming about Spam, I don't even like Spam much, Spam and tuna, I think I'll go for tuna. Had to have kippers or they'd have gone off, never mind. really struggling today but not going to cave in. When I started this I didn't know that I'd already lost 2 stone since the last time I weighed myself, possibly through grief, not from dieting so was shocked at the initial start weight, although I'm sure that I can lose 3 stone and definitely more, I'm beginning to think I might not make the time limit. I'll be like a boxer trying to make the weight, but I'm not going to stand naked on the scales in Clacton leisure centre for anyone, nobody needs to see that!

DAY 14

14th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: cabbage, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon 500ml juice: cabbage, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon 500ml juice: cabbage, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon Strawberries
Thank you Clacton Gazette for telling my story here. All I am trying to achieve is some awareness of vascular disease and some funds for research, I'm more determined than ever to make the 3 stone loss now, going to increase exercise and slightly cut down on food. Going to stick to the green juice today, did some exercises.

DAY 13

13th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: cabbage, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon poached egg and kippers
Been swimming again, feeling good, can't weight for weigh-in tomorrow, I need to lose 8lb this week minimum or I'm up against it. Generally feeing better all round apart from my eyesight, that is still terribly blurred and even with my glasses it's getting hard to work, I am a web designer so this is not good. Just not hungry today which is great, will take advantage and may help with weigh-in. My wedding ring just dropped off, my fingers are definitely thinner!

DAY 12

12th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: broccoli, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon Roast turkey and vegetables cherries
Went for a Carvery healthiest way I could, piled up the veg, didn't have anything I shouldn't except for some gravy. Felt a little guilty but I think it'll be fine. Had some cherries later, nice to have a break from routine. Back to normal tomorrow.

DAY 11

11th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: broccoli, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon Boiled haddock with poached egg and black pepper.
I've noticed if I have a decent sized salad for tea, I'm not hungry for a significant period, still not hungry since 6pm yesterday. Off swimming now, will be hungry after for sure. Eyesight still terribly blurred. Worked hard at swimming feeling really good, hopefully I've finished eating for the day, if not another juice later maybe.

DAY 10

10th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: broccoli, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon, rosemary, watercress. ACV. 500ml juice: raspberry and apple Pilchard and boiled egg salad with apple cider vinegar as dressing.
Going to drop the rosemary and ACV from this, it was really a struggle to drink first thing. Raspberry and apple was delicious though. Feeling hungry so ate an apple, did the job for a while. Going to use the ACV as a salad dressing from now on. I'm happy to carry on like this for now and wait till the next weigh-in to see if I have to go back to just juicing to hit my target. Did the disabled workout again.

DAY 9

9th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

Stewed eels and liquor 500ml juice: broccoli, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon, rosemary, watercress. ACV. Grilled kippers with poached egg
Wife was feeling down so went to traditional pie & mash shop for lunch, I had the only healthy option and delicious it was! Started adding apple cider vinegar to my juice, doesn't improve the flavour but apparently helps weight loss. Added some herbs too, didn't taste any different the ACV made sure of that. Only one juice today, circumstances, back to normal tomorrow. Please sponsor me if you can it's a brilliant cause and the charity is smaller than it should be considering vascular disease accounts for 40% of deaths in the UK many of which are preventable.

DAY 8

8th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: broccoli, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon. 500ml juice: blueberry and apple. Pilchard and boiled egg salad
Feeling really good this morning, skin is clearing up and I'm feeling energetic, that's a first! Off for a swim now. Pushed myself hard at swimming ended up feeling starving afterwards, had to have evening meal early, happy now.

DAY 7

7th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: broccoli, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon. 500ml juice: broccoli, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon.   Kippers with poached egg and black pepper.
So I've been for a weigh-in and its good news, a little short of what I wanted as things slow down but I think I'm just on target. Diabetes is really affecting my eyesight, really blurry vision, had to put my Kindle on max font size, you get about 10 words per page and it's still blurry, I've had this before when dieting it usually returns to normal after a couple of weeks. It's been a long week but feeling ok and still highly motivated. Bought some lovely fresh kippers for tea tonight. Hopefully get some more sponsorship now. In a brilliant mood!

DAY 6

6th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: broccoli, ginger root, celery, cucumber, apples, lemon.   500ml strawberry, blueberry, apples. Boiled haddock with poached egg and black pepper.
Been a bad day, but diet ok still, weigh in tomorrow, I feel like I've lost some weight but will know for sure tomorrow if I'm doing ok or have to work harder next week. Hopefully, if results are good, I can shout about it and raise some more money for charity.

DAY 5

5th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: kale, broccoli, cucumber, apples, lemon. 500ml juice: broccoli, kale, cucumber, apples, lemon.   Boiled haddock with poached egg and black pepper.
So I ended up having to break my fast last night. it wasn't a moment of weakness, it was a conscious decision as I was feeling so ill. I also wanted to be honest and tell you. Anyway within 30 minutes I felt soo much better so was a good decision. Organisation and budget problems have been an issue but hopefully will be back on track today. Decided it was best to supplement my day with one healthy meal, feeling better for it. Did the disabled exercises again though I don't appreciate the sniggering from the family when they see me doing them!

DAY 4

4th July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING AND HEALTHY MEALS

500ml juice: kale, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, lemon, apple 500ml juice: kale, broccoli, leek, cucumber, lemon, apple 500ml juice: rhubarb, apple, lime Tesco Chicken Mediterranean salad
249 kcal
Becoming easier each day so far, no need for so many ingredients in that first one, just using up stuff before it goes off.  Turned into a disaster, was out went swimming with the family and was unable to have a second juice for 10 hours! Felt weak and ill, cheered up later thanks to Kim's home grown organic rhubarb :)

DAY 3

3rd July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING

500ml juice: kale, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, ginger root, lemon 500ml juice: broccoli, celery, cucumber, ginger root, lemon 500ml juice: kale, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, grapefruit 500ml juice:: mango, plums, lime.
Feeling much better today, a little hungry at times, did the 30 mins disabled exercises again.

DAY 2

2nd July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING

500ml juice: mango, apple, lime, raspberry 500ml juice: broccoli, celery, cucumber, ginger root, lemon 500ml juice: plums, apples, lime, tangerine
Started with a delicious fruit juice, manage to ignore the smell of bacon wafting from the kitchen. Found some exercises for disabled on YouTube, I was knackered after the warm-up but managed to finish it. Later had to go through McDonalds drive through! A really challenging day.

DAY 1

1st July 2016

RAW FRUIT AND VEGETABLE JUICING

500ml juice: broccoli, celery, cucumber, ginger root, lemon 500ml juice: broccoli, celery, cucumber, ginger root, lemon 500ml juice: broccoli, celery, cucumber, ginger root, lemon
All went well, I think I'm getting used to the taste of this green juice or the recipe is better than previous attempts. Went for a leisurely swim with the family. Pouring the juice through a strainer makes it much more palatable, nothing worse than finding a lump of broccoli in there and also seems to reduce the frothiness. Only negative was I drank some Diet Coke, I know it's calorie free but the aspartame can mess with your blood sugar will try harder tomorrow. A little hungry at times but didn't want my fourth juice of the day, which I should have had.
